John Cage meets Sun Ra

Once you get past the initial electronic noodling, this gets good.

…via Dangerous Minds: When John Cage Met Sun Ra

(I remember a Sun Ra concert at Rutgers in the late 60s/early 70s. He fit in well in those psychedelic times, while at the same time being light-years beyond.)

A way-cool “music” generator. It would be a big time-sink for me if my wife wasn’t violently “allergic” to repetitive Glass/Reich-like music.

The Ballad of Lady Gaga

Talking Lady Gaga blues…

…A fluke, I figured, trying to make sense
But on date two she wore an electric fence
Just what’s your deal, I said with a stare
She said, Oh I don’t explain what I wear
That night I made it to second base
Got third-degree burns…

There are some obvious jokes to be made about people with Internet access using Twitter to complain about not knowing something, as opposed to using Google to look it up…

…But for the most part, this reaction — all these examples cherry-picked from teenage pop fans and bemused adults — is just plain normal. “Never heard of it”: This has been the natural and traditional response of all sorts of ordinary American humans to all sorts of phenomena. It’s not really about knowledge or information. It’s an argument, for the most part, and a faintly aggressive one — a way of insisting that what you pay attention to really does define the world. What you’ve heard of is real, and everything else is marginal. The center holds, and you are that center. You are normal and aware, and not just some tiny atomized entity that can only hope to know one tiny corner of the universe.

Angie and Lee performing Steve Reich’s Clapping Music

Genius Within: The Inner Life of Glenn Gould | American Masters

Fascinating bio/documentary about one of the most intriguing artists of the late 20th century. In a scene about editing his performances for recordings, he talks about a possible future when people would purchase music as a “kit” and edit it for themselves. Sounds like what we do today with mashups and YouTube re-edits. I think I like “32 Short Films About Glenn Gould” better for it’s artistry, but there’s more hard content in this PBS offering.
