I’m a project manager, baby, and I’ve got a task for you…

Reading and Recommended

Reading and Recommended: With my new train commute, I’m re-discovering reading, thanks to the Kindle app on my iPad. Easing into it with two collections of short pieces: Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives (by David Eagleman) and Stories: All-New Tales (edited by Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio).

Sum is a collection of very (very) short pieces describing possibilities for something no one knows anything about - the afterlife. It’s funny how while most are intriguing, many of them turn out to be not as pleasant as their designer intends.

Stories: All-New Tales is a collection of short stories that can best be described as “fantasy”, as long as you don’t assume the term involves the usual swords and sorcerers associated with the genre. More like fantasy-realism, at least so far.

Jean Shepherd’s Classic 4th of July Story - “Ludlow Kissel and the Dago Bomb that Struck Back”

If you enjoy the perennial Christmas movie “A Christmas Story” (written and narrated by Jean Shepherd), here’s the same characters and neighborhood for 4th of July.

This recording comes from July 4, 1967, when I first heard it.

Book Link: The Goal - Deepak Chopra for the Rust Belt Set

I agree with my friend Clarke - this is hysterical.

The Goal is touted as a “business classic” in Goldratt’s TOC world. Even Eli G says the concepts are common sense, but as a book to learn from, I was never all that impressed. Maybe it’s because my “business novel” intro to TOC was It’s Not Luck, which didn’t overwhelm the ideas with the overwritten narrative to the same extent as The Goal.

This review is on point regarding the literary and pedagogic value of the book…and ROTFLMAO funny.

And a recent comment attached to the review rang equally true…

…I was actually a fan of the book (just finished a few hours ago) until I read your review. You gave me a slap to the face, a “wake up, you simple idiot” nudge. I appreciate that.

[Full Disclosure - I was one of those late-90’s boomer TOC consultants and Goldratt acolytes. Still appreciate the theories and solutions, as well as Eli’s mind, but just not with the Kool-Aid chaser anymore.]
