“A new religion course taught in schools across Quebec was intended to improve inter-cultural understanding, but so far it is generating deep division as hundreds of parents pull their children out of class.”
I have trouble understanding why people whose beliefs are so strong that they believe there is no other valid worldview are so threatened by education about the existence and content of other belief systems. Are they afraid that they might end up questioning and weakening what they feel so strongly?
As one who has given up his belief in anything supernatural, I find myself fascinated by the beliefs of others, their doctrinal and dogmatic content, and their history. (Sometimes I think atheists and agnostics think far more about religion than the religious.) If for no other reason, it’s because I recognize that the world is full of believers and that their actions, their passions, and their politics will have great imact on my public life.
