Successful Project Management - People AND Process
Over at ProjectSteps, a blog I’ve followed for quite some time, Stephen Seay pulls highlights of a study cited in the book The Portable MBA in Project Management by Eric Verzuh. The study was on what are considered success factors for project management in organizations.
The list included predictable items like an agreed upon formal PM structure and a repeatable PM process. Topping the list as the single most important success factor in the companies studied is experienced project managers.
It strikes me that the best way to get experienced project managers, with the ability to assess and communicate what is needed for project success, is to work them in an environment built on a formal structure and repeatable processes. Without those characteristics, project managers get experience but do not have the framework to assess the effectiveness of it.
